YOGIC BANDHA For Vigour and Vitality

Literal meaning of Bandha is lock. In yoga bandh are used for inter locking or regulating the hyper activity of various organs. There are three bandha's Jalandara Bandha, Mula Bandha and Uddiyana Bandha. Each bandha is a lock or closing a part of the interior body. These locks are used in various pranayama and asana practices to tone, cleanse and energize the interior organs.
Jalandhar Bandha: This bandha exercises a control on all the nerves of neck region and thus cures many of the throat. It wards off old age and cures many diseases.
Benefits: Due to firm contraction of throat the Jalandhara Bandha, temporarily arrests the Ida and Pingala nerves. There are Chakra (astral centre) in the body which controls the sixteen vital locations in the body is called Madhya Chakra or Visuddhi Chakra. According to yogis, the sixteen vital locations in the body where the prana (life-giving breath) is installed are : thumb, ankle, knee, thigh, perineum, genital organ, navel, heart, neck, throat, palate, nostrils, the centre of the eye-brows, forehead, cerebrum, and Brahmarandhra (on the top of the head), Jalandhar Bandha revitalizes and tones up these chakra's. In Ayurveda, these sixteen centres are called marma-sthanas (vital spots).

Mulabandha: The region near the anus is known as Muladhara Chakra. The practice of keeping the muscles around anus contracted is known as Mula-bandha in yoga. This makes the genital organs and associated nerves connected with them contract too. All these parts get exercise, and because of increased circulation of blood through them, they become healthy and strong.
Uses: One feels young even in old age. Kundalini power is located in the Muladhara Chakra near the anus; therefore, this bandha is very helpful in awakening this Shakti (power). All diseases of the anal passage like piles etc are cured. It helps in regulation of vata in our body. It should be practised very cautiously and with a peaceful mind. The practice of Mulabandha cures general sexual weakness.





Uddiyana Bandha: Uddiyana is from a Sanskrit root which means to fly, and bandha, means to 'bind, or to fix to a single place'.
In this bandha the diaphragm of the belly moves upwards; the abdomen is as much withdrawn towards the spinal column as possible, and the practicant tries to stay in this pose to the best of his capacity. In the beginning it is easier to practise it in standing pose.
You can do Uddiyana Bandha in two different ways : sitting in Padamasana, or in standing pose.
Benefits: It has a very healthy effect on the organs of the abdomen. It gives exercise to the small and large intestines and cures constipation. Liver and spleen receive strength to perform their normal function. Jatharagni (digestive fire) is stimulated and the intestines perform their function well. Famous classical text of yoga Hath Yoga Pradipika says one who keeps practising Uddiyana bandha regularly feels like a young man even in old age. After mastering this bandha, the paracticant can hope to accomplish the Nauli Process successfully.
Caution: A heart patient should avoid practising Uddiyana bandha.
